Overview

Outboard PalmML starts with the part of a virtual guitar that is hardest to fake: the attack of a real instrument. 400 embedded recordings capture a palm-muted multiscale seven-string across 20 chromatic notes — two pickups, independent left/right takes, five round robins. The Liquid engine then uses that real attack to excite a note-locked string resonance with sympathetic overtones and a fixed cab voicing: the ground tone flows into the note instead of sitting on top as an effect. From a short, controlled chug to a long, singing liquid guitar — finished by a fixed, guitar-focused chain of Graphic EQ, Presence, diode drive, stereo vibe, BBD chorus and Dark Plate.

The attack is real

01/Outboard PalmML

The attack is real

Every note inside the range calls up its own recording of a palm-muted multiscale seven-string — pick attack, string noise, pickup color and the small differences of real takes stay intact. No oscillator, no looped sustain sample: the recording is the note. Outside the 20 recorded notes the instrument stays silent, and neighboring samples are never repitched.

400 recordings, 20 notes

02/Outboard PalmML

400 recordings, 20 notes

The corpus covers 20 chromatic notes from A1 to E3 with two pickup positions, independent left/right takes and five round robins each — 400 lossless recordings embedded in the plugin, no separate content download. Repeated notes rotate through the takes, so a riff never fires the same sample twice in a row.

The Liquid engine

03/Outboard PalmML

The Liquid engine

Turn up LIQUID and the recording becomes an excitation: it drives a note-locked dispersive string resonance, selected sympathetic overtones and a fixed cab voicing — restoring the fundamental the palm mute suppressed. The modeled layer is locked to the note you play; it sustains, blooms and sings without replacing the original attack with a reverb tail. At zero you have the dry recording back.

Tight ↔ Ring

04/Outboard PalmML

Tight ↔ Ring

One axis runs from a short, tightly-damped staccato to a long, singing StringRing sustain. Whiten tames problematic resonance in the Liquid excitation, and a polyphonic wet control keeps low notes and fast repeated patterns from building up — controlled at every setting.

Bridge ↔ neck, morphable

05/Outboard PalmML

Bridge ↔ neck, morphable

Both pickup positions were recorded for every note — and a single control morphs continuously between them, from tight bridge bite to round neck warmth. It is a recorded difference, not an EQ curve, and it can move while you play.

Graphic EQ & Presence

06/Outboard PalmML

Graphic EQ & Presence

An eleven-band graphic EQ with 21 selectable curves sits at the head of the rig, working on the raw instrument signal, followed by a Presence stage for the top-end lift a real rig gives. Together they shape the body before drive, vibe, chorus and plate — surgical when you need it, musical by default.

  • True stereo takes

    07

    True stereo takes

Independent left and right takes make the stereo image — two real performances, decorrelated by nature. A width control scales it from mono-solid to wide, and it stays mono-compatible.

  • Motion & true vibrato

    08

    Motion & true vibrato

Vibrato is created by modulating the sample playback rate — real pitch movement, not a chorus imitation — and the Motion section adds slow filter and level movement that keeps long notes alive.

  • Diode drive & stereo vibe

    09

    Diode drive & stereo vibe

A circuit-modeled diode overdrive adds grit from edge-of-breakup to full saturation, and a stereo lamp/LDR vibe swirls the image — both voiced for the dark palm-mute corpus.

  • Dark plate & soft safety

    10

    Dark plate & soft safety

A dense, dark plate reverb places the instrument without washing out the attack, AntiFizz tames the top end, and a softclip safety stage stays transparent below −1 dBFS.
